SINGAPORE: The sound of an explosion jolted residents at Lorong Limau in Balestier on Tuesday (Feb 3) after a car caught fire.

MediaCorp hotline caller Ivan, said he was having his meal when he heard the explosion. He said a van that was parked beside the car was also burnt.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 6.30pm at Block 76 Lorong Limau. Its officers put out the fire using two water jets. No one was injured.

SCDF added that the main cause of vehicle fires is “due to ignition sources such as overheating and electrical faults within the engine compartment.”

SCDF also said it hopes to reiterate the preventive measures members of public can take to reduce the possibility of similar scenarios happening. The public is advised to the following:

  •         Service your vehicle regularly at authorised vehicle workshops.
  •         During each servicing session, ensure that the vehicle’s electrical, engine and fuel systems are checked for any defect.
  •         Outside of scheduled servicing period, owners are encouraged to conduct visual checks for any sign of oil leakage.
