SINGAPORE - Three men were sent to hospital after a fire broke out at a chemical plant in Tanjong Penjuru on Friday night.

The men, two of whom sustained burn injuries, were conveyed to the Singapore General Hospital, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a statement early on Saturday. The other man was sent to hospital as a precautionary measure.

The SCDF said that it was alerted to the fire at No. 21 Tanjong Penjuru at 8.53pm on Friday, and dispatched three fire engines, three red rhinos, 10 supporting vehicles, two ambulances and one unmanned firefighting machine to the scene.

The fire, which was located in the production area of the chemical plant, was put out within 90 minutes after firefighters wearing breathing apparatus equipment encircled it using six water jets. The unmanned firefighting machine was also deployed.

About 50 SCDF personnel were involved in the operation.

Two eye-witnesses had told The Straits Times about the fire. Firefighters were still at the scene at around 11pm with smoke shrouding the factory and nearby buildings
